Old Habits
As any ex-pat will tell you, when you up-sticks and move to live in a new country, there are some things that you miss more than others. The great British Car-boot sale was high on the list of many ex-pats and they would look forward to the only Car-boot sale on the island at Arco da Calheta. Sadly, the venue organised by Sam Gannon and the Madeira Times, closed in January 2007.
Re-booted
Later that year, a discussion between João Carlos Spinola and Steve Bradshaw about raising further funds for charity ended with an agreement to organise a Car-boot sale in the grounds of the Lar da Paz orphanage.
With Sue and Irene taking early charge of the organisation, the first Car-boot sale on Sunday the 22nd of July 2007 was an instant success! (Lar da Paz blog here)
Taking a gamble
Although support is strong from a hard-core of international sellers and buyers, the venue at Agua da Pena was difficult to find and passing trade was thin. So, after 2 years and having raised over four thousand euros for the orphanage, the organisers agreed that a more central location would appeal to ‘booters’ and buyers alike.http://www.mares-vivas.com/Fund_raising/Archive.htmlshapeimage_16_link_0
Meetings with the administrador (CFO) of the Pestana group, Dr. José Alexandre Lebre Theotónio, and the managers of the Casino & Pestana Hotel, prepared the way for a first class venue, ‘The Casino car-park’. This is due to start in January 2010. A further meeting with the president of the charity CRIAMAR, Dr João Carlos Nunes Abreu, finalised the move with a letter informing the authorities of our intentions.
Win win situation
Fund-raising comes in many forms, from the rattling of tins at one end of the scale to expensive celebrity dinners at the other. Both can leave you feeling short-changed. The car-boot sale is different! It has something for everyone!
The ‘car-booters’ sell their handicrafts, clear unwanted items, help charities and can make a tidy profit too!
The visitors pick up bargains, learn useful tips about living in Madeira and expand their social network. Everyone enjoys the day out!
Even the sponsors benefit from visits to our home page and the subsequent clicks on their links.
Why?
If we can make money for charity and have a great time doing it... Why not?Home_EN.htmlshapeimage_17_link_0
